Down and Feather Group Notes Success of ‘Labeling Compliance Program’

NEW YORK (October 31, 2014)—As part of the ongoing oversight and review process for its Labeling Compliance Program (LCP), the American Down and Feather Council (ADFC) concluded, at its recent Board of Directors meeting, that this program has significantly helped to ensure that natural fill bedding products sold in the U.S. are labeled correctly and meet packaging and advertising claims.

Launched in 2007, the LCP provides a system where any party can register a complaint against suspected inferior natural-fill product. Once filed, the complaint is investigated by a third party laboratory and a determination of whether the product is properly labeled is made. During the early years of the program, dozens of complaints were filed and investigated. However, the numbers of complaints has decreased dramatically in the last three years—an indication that the industry is doing a thorough job of policing itself and ensuring product quality.

Council Chairman Stephen Palmer said, “The Labeling Compliance Program gives retailers and consumers of down and feather products confidence in the quality of the products and accuracy of labeling and packaging claims. We are pleased to see compliance levels are so strong within our industry.” Palmer went on to note that compliant retailers are invited to display the circular, blue ADFC label on their packaging.

Independent labs which test down and feather products have indicated that the success rate on products from the U.S. is nearly 100%. This figure is significantly higher than in other global markets.
