Expanded LCA Reflects Growing Focus on Down’s Sustainability in an Evolving Bedding Industry

April 21, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 21, 2026) – The American Down and Feather Council (ADFC) reinforces the International Down and Feather Bureau’s (IDFB) ongoing work to expand its global Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which will now include recycled down for the first time. This next phase reflects the industry’s continued commitment to advancing transparent, science-based sustainability insights.

The original LCA, conducted by Long Trail Sustainability, established a strong foundation for understanding the environmental profile of down, demonstrating 85-97% lower environmental impacts compared to synthetic alternatives across key categories such as climate change, human health, and energy demand. Building on this work, the updated study will incorporate refreshed global data and an expanded scope that reflects evolving industry practices.

“ADFC fully supports IDFB’s efforts to strengthen and expand the LCA,” said David Sweet, Public Relations Chair of ADFC. “As sustainability expectations evolve, it’s critical that our industry continues to invest in credible data that reflects how products are sourced, processed, and used over time.”

A key addition to the updated LCA is the evaluation of recycled down—an established practice involving the recovery, cleaning, and reprocessing of existing material. Including recycled down in the LCA will provide a more complete picture of how natural materials contribute to circular systems and long-term resource efficiency.

This work also reflects a broader shift toward systems-based sustainability, where performance is measured across the full product lifecycle. Down’s durability, longevity, and ability to be recovered and reused support this approach while helping reduce waste over time.

As transparency becomes a baseline expectation across the textile and bedding sectors, independently verified data remains essential for clear communication with stakeholders from manufacturers and designers to retailers and consumers. ADFC will continue to support IDFB’s efforts and looks forward to the insights the expanded LCA will provide. For more information about the original LCA and its findings, please visit www.downandfeathercouncil.com/sustainability/.

About the American Down and Feather Council (ADFC)
The ADFC, a section of the Home Fashion Products Association (HFPA), is a voluntary association of manufacturers of natural fill bedding products, as well as dealers, buyers, sellers, and processors of feathers and down for use in home fashion products. The goals of the ADFC are to further the common interests of the down and feather products industry, and to both maintain and improve product quality. For more information, visit www.downandfeathercouncil.com
